Why is my iPad Hotspot not working after iOS 18 update?

I have a Dell desktop running Ubuntu latest LTR that is connecting and using internet OK. However the Dell XP 15 running Win 11 can see and connect to the iPad (Mini 5) but says no internet. IPhone, thankfully still running IOS 17 will work with both computers. What have they done in update?

Try reseting your iPad/iPhone Network settings:

I have the same problem but reseting network settings does not help. I tried to connect to iPhone hotspot from PC and laptop, both connected, and both say no internet. My devices do not have any software specified, only default windows defender

Try a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to assist with troubleshooting:

I'm unable to replicate any issues with the hotspot feature when running iOS 18.x - the current release being iOS/iPadOS 18.0.1.

The issue that you describe suggests that the client devices with which you are having difficulty do not have a routable IP Address - your IP Address usually being assigned by DHCP. When problems occur, your client devices may only have a self-assigned link-local IP address that begins 169.254.x.x.

If you are using a VPN App or security/AV/firewall software (e.g., Norton, MacAfee) this may be interfering with DHCP or your network connection - perhaps preventing the associated device from obtaining a valid IP Address for the WiFi network/hotspot to which you are attempting to connect. In such situations, the resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to temporarily disable or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

If connecting client devices to a hotspot connection hosted by your iPhone or iPad, review your hotspot settings:

Settings > Personal Hotspot >

  • Allow Others to Join - set to ON
  • Maximise Compatibility - set to ON
