update stops with 9 minutes remaining

When I update macOS at some point I am logged out and the login screen appears. If I do not login the installation remains paused with “9 minutes remaining.”

It’s the same for every macOS update.

Is this normal?

I started an update today and went out expecting to come back and see the install completed… nope. I logged in and there was “9 minutes remaining” with a progress bar and white Apple logo.

No it's not normal. Something is interfering with the normal process. I suggest that you reboot into Safe Mode (Apple has instructions for Safe Mode, they differ for different models) and try the update in Safe Mode, with all peripherals unconnected. If it works, next step is to figure out why this is happening. It could be a hardware problem but most likely is something that is installed, or maybe a peripheral that is connected.

Etrecheck, a free download, is a diagnostic program that produces a report (it has no identifying info, you can check this) that may shed some light on this. Run in in normal (NOT Safe mode) mode. You can post the report here using the Additional text button below.
