How can I recover my lost Apple Music playlists on iMac?

For some unknown reason my imac has made my music playlists that I have been creating for years . . disappear. I am so very angry. How can I get them back from the apple music software devil?

All playlists gone, or just some of them? If it is all hover to right of the word Playlists in the sidebar and if you see the word Show then tap on it. Otherwise see Empty/corrupt iTunes/Music library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community. It is also worth being clear on whether or not you have a subscription to the Apple Music service, or are just talking about the macOS application.

While I don't see how that is possible, however, have you noted the last time you had them visible in Music? You might consider going into time machine to a date before to recover. But first duplicate/rename what's left of the present library and put it in a safe place and if needed you can still open in Music later, important if you added music after when lost.

This is why I reached out. "I don't see how this is possible". It is my understanding that to play music I need to go through and use the apple music software. I open it up and my playlists are gone. I will try and use time machine and hope I can just retrieve the apple music. I appreciate Charles for taking out the time to address my issue. I hope someone can find an answer as I really don't want to back up my computer every single time I create a playlist.

Presumably the music is still in your library? Might you have more than one library and you are not in the same library with the music, thus no playlists? And you are the only user of the computer? And what about a newly created playlist, does that stay? Sorry to be quizzing and not being able to clearly answer, but if all has been considered, calling Apple Care ‭(800) 275-2273‬ for free technical help (they help even thou not under warranty) be a next step unless someone in the forum steps up with good info.
