MacBook files on desktop have disappeared

Hi All,

All of a sudden this morning all my files and folders on the desktop have disappeared. I've gone through finder and selected the Desktop Folder, but it's empty.

Also on the Desktop background I've noticed two strange arrows appear at the side, one on the Left and one on the Right ( < >). Any ideas about what could have happened?
