How to remove a VIP from VIP list without emails

I have old VIP headers under VIPs in Apple mail, but I no longer have emails, so I am unable to "unstar" and remove the names or headers. Is there another way to remove them from the VIPs list.

Remove someone’s VIP status

  1. Go to the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Select a message from the VIP.
  3. Move the pointer next to their name in the message header, then click their star
  4. The person’s VIP mailbox is removed from the Mail sidebar and the Favorites bar; their messages remain in the Inbox.

Your VIPs are available on your other Mac computers, iOS devices, and iPadOS devices where you’re signed in to the same Apple Account and Contacts is turned on in iCloud settings.

Unfortunately that wouldn’t affect the VIP list the way I needed, but I figured out how to edit the VIP list another way. I was able to edit the VIP list on my iPhone which I couldn’t figure out how to do on my MacBook. The VIP list on the iPhone has an active “info” (“i” with a circle ⭕️ around it in blue) button. When I selected it, the VIP list opened up and there’s an edit button in blue at the top left. When you selected it enables deleting of each VIP label. Problem solved. Not sure why this isn’t possible in Apple Mail on MacBook but is possible on iPhone and I imagine also iPad.

Ok, I figured out a way to remove VIP status on my iMac 2019 running Sequoia 15.1 -

1.) Open the Mail app

2.) On the left side screen, open the VIPs list (drop down menu)

3.) Start a new email

4.) type the name you want removed in the Address bar and hit enter

5.) Move cursor to highlight their name and tap small arrow to drop down menu to right of recipient's name

6.) Tap Remove from VIPs

I had about 10 addresses in my VIPs that I no longer wanted there. I entered ALL of them in my address bar, then went backward from the last name, one by one, removing from VIP then deleting their name from the address bar.

Whew. Should not be this difficult. And there is NO "Help" info on this. Unacceptable, Apple.

Hope this helps the next person.
