Upgrading iPhone and Apple Watch causes Exchange invites to auto-forward

When I upgraded my iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 18) to a brand new iPhone 16 Pro recently, a number of old invitations for recurring events were auto-forwarded to every recipient of the original invitation. About 10 different recurring meetings were forwarded to a few hundred colleagues, sent as me on behalf of the original meeting organizer.

This is through an Exchange connection to our Microsoft365.com-hosted Exchange services. The original meeting organizer for all these forwarded meetings is a specific Exchange identity (let's call it OurTeamMtgs) whose calendar is shared within the company and which is used to send out team meetings.

My old iPhone was set up to connect to this Exchange server for mail and calendars.

Our technical group could not work out why invitations were auto-forwarded. It did not happen again.

Then today I got a new Apple Watch, and when I upgraded from my old watch to the new, a large set of invitations were auto-forwarded again. I have not yet checked to see if it's the same set.

My old watch was set to have calendars reflect those on my iPhone.

Does this ring any bells? Has anyone experienced anything similar? Fortunately I have understanding colleagues, but it's quite disruptive.

Two more notes:

  1. One of the old invitation was forwarded in the middle of the night last night, 36 times over the course of 6 minutes (between 4:34am eastern and 4:40am eastern).
  2. Another colleague auto-forwarded invitations (same calendar, different subset of recurring events) yesterday when they updated their iPhone. One common point between us: we both had added the "OurTeamMtgs" calendar through Outlook for Mac prior to updating our devices, and so it appeared in the calendar list for the iOS-level Exchange connection. When I removed that from my Desktop client, it was removed from the list of calendars on the iOS connection (and so hopefully this won't happen for me again, but it does seem that iOS is doing something naughty).
