After waking my Mac from sleep, I often have to press (click) on the Magic Trackpad so that it will connect with the Mac.
If that is not your issue, it may be radio interference.
If you connect the USB-to-Lightning charging cable between the Mac mini and the Magic Trackpad, do you still have the problem? With the charging cable attached, the Magic Trackpad becomes a USB device, and you are no longer using Bluetooth. If it work better, then start looking for radio interference. Try unplugging USB devices.
Bluetooth uses the 2.4GHz frequency band. USB3 poorly shielded cables, connectors, or devices can cause 2.4GHz interference. WiFi also uses the 2.4GHz band. If your WiFi router is on your desk , try moving it away.
Some cordless home phones (not many) use 2.4GHz. Is someone on the phone when this happens?
Some baby monitors use 2.4GHz.
NOTE: the baby monitors, cordless phones and WiFi could be neighbors, if they are close by (such as apartment or condo living).
Which update?
Lose control how? The cursor does not move? Does it move erratically?
We can't help if you are not specific.
