Broken: Universal Control Keyboard Mouse Sharing OS Sequoia 15.0

After MacOS Sequoia 15.0 was installed Sept 18, 2024 (on both my MBP 2021 14in and MM 2018), the linking of keyboard and mouse between MBP and MM is now broken (universal control). If I can get it to work for 1 minute, it then breaks, despite the display icon showing that such sharing is active on both devices. Yes, I have restarted Bluetooth, WiFi, and both devices too.

The "universal control" to share the keyboard and mouse seems broken and buggy, even if it works for a minute, then breaks.

Yes, the keyboard and mouse are official Apple products too.

I use this feature all the time, and hope there will be a bug fix very soon.

Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?

I agree with @TCC Bob.....I updated both the MM and the MBP to Sequoia 15.1, then restarted both machines, then turned on the sharing of keyboard and mouse.

It appeared to be working fairly well most of day. However, I still experience intermittend "drops" and "freezes", where the mouse AND keyboard control seem to be frozen, and stuck between the two machines.

I have been able to get the universal control back by using the MBP's touchpad and keyboard, then toggle and hit esc on one or both machines. So far, that has "unstuck" the keyboard and mouse when that has happened (which originally this approach was not working).

Therefore, with Sequoia 15.1 updates and restarts, things have definitely improved. The function is not flawless.

For Apple, having this function achieving only a "functional and intermittently annoying standard" still leaves room for improvement.

Just updated today and am having the same issues on Sequoia and iPad os 18. I use Mac mini M1 and M4 iPad Pro. It will share the keyboard and trackpad from MM for a minute or so then disconnect then randomly reconnect. I've tried turning off the share function, restarting, re-enabling, turning off and on wifi and bluetooth and nothing fixes it. The weird thing is that the MM has no problem screen mirroring or extending to my iPad so THEY SEE EACH OTHER. Something is broken with share keyboard/mouse/trackpad specific function. My iPad is my primary work device that I would love to be able to share with my MM. Like Kasezilla said "it's killing my workflow". APPLE PLEASE FIX!

Still breaks: Sequoia 15.1....

This still works, then breaks, throughout the day. My MM is the "main" system with the Apple Keyboard and Mouse. I use UC with my nearby MBP. Each time it stops, it is with the MBP that stops working with UC, and I have to use the MBP touchpad and keyboard to hit ESC, then re-open Settings/Displays on the MBP. It then automatically reconnects UC on the MBP. This will work for many minutes, or maybe an hour or more. However, it then fails at some point, and I have to go through the steps to get the MBP working again with the UC and the MM.

The MM will function with the keyboard and the mouse, but the UC is not working with the MPB.

At present, I have to keep the MBP's Settings/Displays window ready and available for the very frequent drops of UC.

I have gone through all the steps of system updates on both machines, along with signing out then back in to the same iCloud account on both machines. I have also removed (forget this device) both the keyboard and the mouse from the MM, and then added them back on the Bluetooth settings.

I continue to have very frequent freeze/drops of the UC, on the MBP side.

Any similar experiences? Solutions?

UC was working perfectly for me prior to the recent Sequoia 15.5 upgrade (and previous iterations it appears from these posts)

My secondary MBPro is still running Sonoma (14.6.1) however so perhaps for me it's an incompatibility issue. although from the posts here I'm not filled with confidence. Will try upgrading prior to throwing mud Apple's way.

I've tried all the steps posted here but still no luck - it may help others in this predicament and although it's a few years old, the steps are still relevant:

Apple knows about the issue, they are just choosing not to fix it. I went through a period of literally a month and a half to two months of essentially being a bug tester for them when I reported the issue.

Their first tactic is to try to find fault with your equipment or that you’re doing something wrong. When that wasn’t the case, I only ended up getting a “Well, they know there’s an issue and we’ll get back to you when it’s fixed.” that was months ago.

Apple stuff used to just work. That’s not the case anymore, there are so many bugs that they are just not fixing. Probably because they want to make Siri so filled with AI. It’s ridiculous.

It is with a heavy heart that I come to report that the recent upgrade to 15.2 broke universal control again :( It was working fine for me in 15.1, but now keep losing connection between macbook and new mac mini both running 15.2. UGH. The two machine keep flipping in an out of connectivity with each other every few minutes. You can open the Displays panel in System Prefs on both machines and just watch the other display appear and disappear every few minutes. This is very upsetting.

I upgraded to MacOS 15.2 today. UC worked! At least, for a while. Perhaps 10 minutes without so much as a hitch. There are signs of life, and it's certainly better than it has worked on any MacOS 15 release, but it's still dropping out regularly (and I can see that it's becoming "out of sync" with one computer displaying that it is working correctly, and the other not showing connection).

Something has been done, but I'm going to complain again because this is the third release that hasn't resolved the issue.

Hello greg2u! Well, I spoke too fast. After working a couple times following the upgrade of the iPad Pro 12.9 to 18.2.1, UC decided to go AWOL for good. It's been ten days now that it's been impossible to make it work, even for a minute or two. Turning machines on and off, switching UC on and off, on either or both machines... nothing... The whole thing is a mystery...

Beyond frustrated. Two Macbook Pro laptops side by side for years, Universal Control made it so much easier.

Since updating to Sequoia- completely unusable.

Both on the same wi-fi network. Both logged into the same iCloud account. Both on Sequoia 15.4.

Open either machine's settings, displays- and you can sit and watch the other machine's display show up, then 3 seconds later, disappear. This repeats endlessly.

Main machine on the left for work has the Apple keyboard and magic mouse paired. Second machine for photography on the right- and now is essentially unusable thanks to the buggiest upgrade I've ever done. Seriously regret upgrading either device now.

I occasionally had the issues described but when my M4 mini and Air M2 upgraded to 15.4.1 it stopped working altogether. This is such a great feature but it is a shame it doesn't work very well. I have four 34" monitors two on each and loved being able to just use one keyboard and mouse and cut and paste between the two. Made my work so much easier.

I now have two keyboards and two mice and no cut and paste - such a pain.

as of 10/4/2024, I have fully updated to Sequoia 15.0.1 on both the MM and the MBP. This problem still persists, with my Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse not sharing across both machines, after perhaps only 1-2 minutes of appearing to work.

Once the linkage breaks, it then becomes a game of using the MBP trackpad to try to use the pointer on the MPB, which may allow the pointer on the MM to reappear and try to manipulate with the mouse. However, this does not work after a few moves, and things get "locked up".

I then have to turn off the Link Keyboard and Mouse sharing, in hopes that each machine can then work with its own track pad or mouse.

The linked and shared keyboard and mouse across my nearby Apple computers needs to work!

Still broken,

GW
