Error downloading macOS Sequoia

Today, when I was downloading to macOS Sequoia, I downloaded it, but then It says "Failed to personalize software update. Please try again later." "An error occurred while downloading the selected updates. Please check your internet connection and try again later." When seeing this. I restarted my laptop. I then tried again but It showed up with this. Then, I tried restarting my modem and router. After doing this. I tried to restart the upgrade. When doing so, it did the same thing.

Then I tried connecting it via ethernet, but it then did the same thing.

I then tried downloading it from the apple website, then it downloaded as an app. Then I tried to download it from there. That did not work. It showed the same error but without the "internet connection" part.

After that failed attempt, I tried making a bootable usb to boot into the installer. This did not work either. the same thing popped up.

I don't want to erase the disk and download sequoia from there in risk from loosing data. I have a backup on a hard drive but I am afraid of loosing data either way.

If anyone could help me with this problem I have a 2023 Macbook pro M3 14 inch

I find this a most dreadful and beyond poor service. My MacBook Air M3 is less than 6 days old. Not being able to update the laptop clearly shows the laptop is not "fit for purpose" I have received two telephone support instances whereby a number of attempted fixes were made to update the software - both to no avail. I have an appointment with the Genius Bar on Monday. I am not prepared to wait for up to 30 days for the software update to be fixed by apple and lose my option of a full refund.

This debacle falls well below the level service we should expect.

I have the very same laptop and am getting the same response as you, each time I try to download Sequoia. Whatever is going on has to be on Apple's side. I've owned MacBooks since 2008 and have never, ever had a problem downloading new operating systems when they are released. This makes no sense to me. And I will not jump through hoops for an Apple release. They need to fix this.

I have tried both.

You can download using the Terminal.app

See full installers, copy and paste

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

For the new Sequoia copy and paste:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.0

I would try signing out of AppleID and back in again

>System Setting>AppleID

I completely agree with you on this. My MacBook Pro is slightly less than 2 weeks old. Even if there is a work-around to fix it, I don't expect to have to do a work-around. It should work the way all new operating system downloads work each year, especially on a brand new MacBook Pro. I read somewhere that Apple acknowledges that it's a known issue, and I intend just to wait and keep trying the standard way, the way that it's worked for me on every MacBook I've ever owned since 2009.

I had the same issue with a brand new MacBook Air 15" M3. I just called Apple Support and we walked through several steps. I had to use another Mac to "Revive" the MacBook Air and the install worked. Revive preserves the files, Restore wipes the device. In my case Revive worked. Find article here to describe the process: How to revive or restore Mac firmware - Apple Support

For now, there is only one option for solving this problem.

  1. You will need another Mac.
  2. Download Apple Configurator 2 from the App Store.
  3. Connect your Mac to the other Mac with Apple Configurator 2 installed using a charging cable (your computer must be in DFU mode). Follow the instructions (How to revive or restore Mac firmware - Apple Support).
  4. Select the Revive option in Apple Configurator (right-click on your Mac that is in DFU mode -> Advanced -> Revive), and wait for the software to download and for Apple Configurator to complete the installation.
  5. If Revive fails, the last option is Restore (this will erase all data on the computer) -> Right-click on the DFU Mac -> Restore.

Restore will resolve this problem in 99% of cases.

this is what I did to resolve because I had a folder Rosetta sitting in my /Library/Updates folder which seemed to be hindering things, I also couldn't remove SIP to remove the folder and after looking a several different solutions came up with these steps to resolve:

1) removed appleID from the system , system settings/select ID, remove account

2) booted into safe mode, opened terminal and disabled SIP using: csrutil disable

3) rebooted into safe mode and cleared the folders (in my case Rosetta) from 'VloumeName/Library/Updates' leaving just the plist files in there in my case command was sudo rm -R '/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Updates/Rosetta'

4) rebooted again into safe mode and requested update via terminal sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R

5) system rebooted a couple of times

6) logged into new 15.1 beta 4 (this will vary depending on your upgrade track)

7) rebooted again into safe mode, then turned SIP back on using csrutil enable in terminal

8) rebooted normally and added my iCloud/appleID back to system

hope this helps you or someone else

cheers

You can try from a Safeboot—Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
