My phone is now working!

So after looking at the suggestions for a fix, I discovered that a soft reset worked perfectly for me. Suddenly Siri is working and there's no dictation lag. I'm no longer grumpy with my phone. I strongly recommend this for everyone suffering lag on their 16 Pro Max (or possibly other models,) as this was a lifesaver for me.

Here's the simple process:

  1. Press and quickly release the Volume up button
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume down button
  3. Immediately press and hold the Side button until the screen goes blank…keep holding until you see the Apple logo (will take quite a few seconds.)

Done! This is all it took to get my phone working great. I hope it works for you, too.

The ios18 update obviously has a bug that causes the Siri automatic spoken responses to not work. The spoken responses only work if you select prefer spoken responses OR when you select Driving Focus. Stop blaming the end user and fix the darn thing. Oh. BTW. If have 40+ years experience in the tech field. Apple needs to thoroughly test for the issue. Do better Apple.

Siri is silent on my new iPad Pro 2024 with 18.1.1 software update. I cannot make her talk to me. The color lights are on and a written message appears that she is only listening to me when I talk! really??? What about providing answers?

The fixes I found on YouTube and the nets do not help. I enabled Apple Intelligence, I listened to Apple security messages, but nothing helps. It seems there is no Apple Intelligence on it yet?

does anybody have any answers?

Ha. No irony here at all but your post solves another problem I have: I want to be able to dictate to iPhone via my bluetooth-connected hearing aides.

Turing Siri off completely solves the problem and the hearing aides do the listening. Now I can put the phone in my pocket and blather on to my heart's content.

I had seen another thread on the issue of connecting a bluetooth mike or hearing aides -- not sure I can find it again but if I can -- or anyone replies here with a suggestion -- I will post this there too.

Mine still doesn’t work. I have the iPhone 16 Pro. Everything states prefer spoken in Siri and it still does not speak and my main concern Is it used to on Find My automatically find someone I have approval for but now it tells me I have to unlock it to find that person, but it is unlocked in Find My. So I have to go back to my phone and unlock it. I’ve had an iPhone since the 3s. This is a glitch. Anyone out there know how to fix this issue? Please know I have everything selected I need to, as it did it before the update and worked just great. Thank you.

You are absolutely correct, Mike.

that is the aspect of upgrading to iOS 18, that I concerns me the most.

it is very irritating not to be able to get a response from Siri, which I’ve been using for many years. Apparently, blind iOS 18 users are going to be hung out to dry because Siri won’t be able to communicate with them..!!

I can’t believe Apple is that inept, to have this happen..!!

Based on some of these responses, it seems like it’s a similar issue, but it’s presenting a little bit differently.

In my case, I have no problem with Siri speaking to me when the settings are set to Prefer Spoken Responses. My issue is with Automatic mode — not a peep coming from my phone since it was selected. So I’m kinda stuck with Siri either talking too much or not at all.

I might look into and, if possible, Imma create a Shortcut automation and link it to the Action Button. (Feel free to “steal” the idea… though, I don’t know if it’s a thing yet).

yes, i did that, but then it says under that that siri will will respond out loud even when your phone is on silent

It used to be when it was on automatic that when you have it on silent Siri would respond with a visual worded explanation

And if you don't have your phone on silent then Siri would respond with voice and words on the screen

but now, if I choose automatic and I have my sound on, not silent, Siri does not speak

only word responces show in screen

It's frustrating because when I'm driving I like to be able to ask Siri a question and hear the answer without looking at my screen

thank you for your solution!

It’s getting to the point that I’m becoming leery of any iOS, iPadOS and macOS updates. Quality assurance simply isn’t a thing for Apple anymore. Steve Jobs would never have allowed such buggy releases. If there is a parameter set and backed up in iCloud, a new release should use that setting. Instead it often doesn’t set anything with unforeseen results from uninitialized variables.

if that wasn’t bad enough, Apple is now “curating” all of my carefully filed photos from almost three decades and sorting them randomly all through iCloud and file systems. What the heck are they thinking by randomly moving all of my data into random places. I’m seriously considering looking into Android.
