Wireless Time Machine Solutions

I would like to have a wireless Time Machine system backing up my laptop automatically and in the background even when I am not connected to my backup drive wired.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2020 running Sonoma 14.6.1

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 14.6

I have a wireless backup system on my home network. in the basement, I have an old Mac Pro, with several big drives on it, always-on. (Has to be running 10.13 or later.) That older Mac has been set up as a Time machine backup destination of the various Macs in the household.

So My wife does not have any cables going to her computer except Power, and her computer does Time machine backups to two different drives, not even on her computer.

you could set up a similar system using a Network Attached Storage NAS) device, or an old Time capsule. You MIGHT be able to use one drive on a USB cable on a router, but I think each Router would be a distinct case for setup. Non-apple solutions do not need a Mac-formatted drive, but they MUST be capable of creating Mac sparse-Bundle disk image files.

A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device is a very minimal computer (likely running Linux, but that part is not very important) that supports one or a bunch of Drives. A NAS device can be connected into the network anywhere and accessed using regular File Sharing techniques. Once set up, it can be used for ordinary File Sharing, and/or as as a Time Machine backup destination.

Your home Network consists of everything connected to your main Router by ANY medium, whether by Wi-Fi, by Ethernet, by Cable-TV data cables, or occasionally something else as well. There is no need for "all Wi-Fi" or "All ethernet" to be part of the same network, and any additional Wi-Fi access points or Ethernet Switches, when set up properly, are also included, regardless of how they are connected.
