Contacted Dell support, they say the laptop supports USB4, DisplayPort 1.4, Thunderbolt 4 and also enables you to connect to an external display using a display adapter. The same display works without problems on a 2023 MacBook Air (naturally) as well as on a PC laptop (manufacturer Framework) without problems.
That Apple display is for Macs only - neither Dell nor Apple will assist or explain connectivity to anything else. Additionally, helping with an illegit configuration is against forum rules. You’re on your own, sorry!
If this display works without problems with a 2023 MacBook Air, then I suspect that you have misidentified either the display or the adapter. (Especially since AFAIK, Apple does not make USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapters.)
The A1407 Thunderbolt Display requires Thunderbolt input. You would use an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-2 adapter when attaching it to the MacBook Air. A USB-C to (Mini) DIsplayPort adapter would not work.
Thank you for clarifying, and yes, I did not describe it correctly. What I use to connect the display to the MacBookAir is a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple.
