Apple Broke Dolby Digital 5.1 Output on Apple TV 4K

Not sure why nobody else is mentioning this, but figured I'd post to help others. One of these last few tvOS updates has completely broken Dolby Digital output (on Apple TV 4K, it seems).

I have a 2nd gen 4K model that had been fine until a recent update. I change the audio output in Settings to force Dolby Digital 5.1 for my speakers (Logitech Z906), but this suddenly no longer works! My speakers do not light the proper "Decode" light to indicate a true 5.1 signal, and the voices clearly come from left and right channels instead of just the center.

This was easy to confirm. I purchased a brand new 3rd gen Apple TV 4K (128GB) and it shipped with tvOS 17.1. I configured the audio output to force DD 5.1 and tested a movie... and everything worked perfectly. The "Decode" light indicated a 5.1 signal and voices, etc, clearly only came through the center channel. Then I upgraded to tvOS 17.4 and immediately tested the same movie, and it's broken! Nothing else changed.

Strangely enough, I have an old 1080p Apple TV running tvOS 17.4 (latest) and it still outputs Dolby Digital just fine.

I have provided this information to AppleCare as well as Apple.com/feedback. Kind of a ridiculous bug to go unpatched still. Hopefully someone will notice while we all sit here with broken audio.

I got back my 2017's 4k version, so here is the final verdict for the current situation. All devices are plugged on the exactly same cables (same HDMI, LAN and power cable), and I been checked it sequentially one by one with the exactly same contents. All of the Apple TV's audio settings was configured to "Change Format" enable with the "Dolby Digital 5.1" option.

Apple TV HD (2015; A1625/32GB, 18.0/22J357)

- netflix: 5.1 OK (tested with couple of movies where the Netflix displays the "5.1" logo)

- youtube: 5.1 OK

- vlc: 5.1 OK

Apple TV 4k (2017; A1842/64 GB, 18.0/22J357):

- netflix: stereo (some of the previously tested movies have a "spatial" logo instead of the previusly visible "5.1" (the others still displays "5.1"), but all plays back with stereo only)

- youtube: 5.1 OK

- vlc: 5.1 OK

Apple TV 4k (2022; A2843/128GB, 18.0/22J357):

- netflix: stereo (none of the previously tested movies had any "spatial" or "5.1" logo)

- youtube: stereo

- vlc: stereo

I have updated to tvOS 18.1 (just released to all) and can confirm the issue is NOT fixed for me.

I tried various sources like Apple TV+, Netflix, YouTube, Max (HBO)... none of them light the proper "Decode" light to indicate Dolby 5.1 on my Logitech Z906 speakers. And it's obvious the audio still sounds terrible.

This is extremely disappointing. My gut says it was never going to work. Whatever issue I have predates anything on tvOS 18 that others only seem to experience when upgrading to that version. I feel like perhaps Apple transitioned how audio is handled around tvOS 17.3 or 17.4, and this is not a "bug" to them.

It's unfortunate, but I cannot invest anymore in this platform when surround sound that was working fine is taken away from me. Not even buying a new device solves the problem, but that won't even be a consideration going forward.

I hope this fixes whatever issue others are having, though.

Content that is flagged as Dolby Atmos plays as Atmos and is reported as such by the soundbar display. 5.1 used to show as Dolby Audio with sound coming from all channels. Now it reports PCM and sound only from the left and right front channels. Play the same content on the TVs on board ATV app and it plays as Dolby Audio complete with centre and rear channel sound.

I've just turned on my Apple 4K TV box 1st gen to watch something off Netflix.

I thought it was a Netflix problem but first but it's happening and every app that I have and any films that I purchased too in iTunes. Everything worked fine until this TV OS 18 update. Never turned on auto update.

I have a Denon AVRX2200 Receiver that displays what audio I am getting. I can change sound mode but I do not get the option of Dolby Digital anymore. Just plain old surround sound.

The Apple 4K TV first gen is part of my home cinema setup and I consider 5.1 sound crucial to watching anything.

If someone knows how to roll back to the latest version of OS 17 I would like to know how please.

You have a valid point. PCM does not mean 2.0. I like your troubleshooting which makes sense. However, a lot of AVR's especially newer ones will upconvert a 2.0 signal automatically and indicate it is running through as many speakers/channels as the AVR can handle.

Example, AVRs could take a 5.1 and turn it into 7.4.2 (Atmos). Does your AVR have a "STRAIGHT," or "DIRECT" mode? What these modes will do is it passes the sounds through directly as the source puts out. I tested the same way you did, at first, I was like, "who cares if it displays PCM as long as it works correctly," until I realized it didn't work correctly. I did not put my AVR on "DIRECT." When I did, it indicates a 2.0 signal coming into the receiver (showing only the Front L/R was being used), and it was my AVR that upconverted into 7.4.2 when it wasn't in DIRECT. I came to this conclusion because I tested the AppleTV 4K box even when it showed all channels were active, it sounded funny, so I then used the native AppleTV application on my LG TV, the decoding was correct, and the sound was much, much fuller, even at the same volume, using the same movies. I have also tested with other services such as Netflix using AppleTV 4K box vs Apple TV application on the LG TV. When I switched both test to DIRECT, the ATV4K Box, was simply upconverting 2.0 lossless. (top photo is AppleTV Box, bottom is native AppleTV app on LG TV, 3rd photo is in DIRECT mode with the display set to indicate the channels used).

When I use my LG AppleTV application, it will pass through all channels indicated much like your screen shot (showing all the speakers being utilized, I apologize, to save time, I did not screen shot everything). When using "STRAIGHT," or "DIRECT" with the AppleTV 4K, it indicates only 2 channels. Please see screenshot. Please let me know if you have a DIRECT/STRAIGHT/PASSTHRU mode on your receiver and what your results are.
