message not downloaded from server

I know this is a common problem - email arrives with “message not downloaded from server” and there’s no other content. Kind of random - some emails open, others don’t. Is an issue on our iPhones and iPads, not our Mac. This is a Verizon/Yahoo account - not an issue with my gmail account. Tried forced restart with Apple chat support - didn’t work. Very frustrating for emails we need to open right away such as password resets, etc. Opening the Verizon/Yahoo email account through the browser - no issues.

Mail not loading from server

When I follow the sequence in Settings to Accounts, etc. my Advanced page does not show anything like that - the POP settings, etc. - just some Mailbox Behaviors settings and stuff like that.

It doesn’t matter which of us tries to open a particular email first as the first to do that has the problem as well. Very erratic in that sometimes the mails arrive and we can open them - other times we can’t. I have a separate Apple ID but it’s not tied to this email as far as I know. I appreciate your help but I feel I’m pulling you into a deep hole with this. I’m wondering if I’m better off contacting Apple support or going to an Apple Store for help - there’s two iPhones and iPads affected by this. We’ve shared the same email for many years - this started a couple months ago - and from what I’ve seen online, I’m not alone with this issue.

Yes - 17.3.1. When using the suggested path, the Advanced page has no info like that, just several toggle buttons. We have had two iPhones and two iPads for years and have used the same Apple ID for a long time as well - never had any mail download issues until several months ago. I have a second gmail account and it works perfectly. As mentioned previously I see numerous people on Apple forums having this same problem - I’ve seen many suggestions - tried most of them - no luck. Not seeing any responses from Apple with a fix. Did an online chat with Apple - they suggested a forced start - tried that on all four devices - no luck. They said any further help would have to be kicked up a notch to their support team. This is my second attempt to try and reply - as sometimes hitting the Post button after typing my message won’t go - says to try again later - tried that and my response disappeared - fingers crossed this time.

I don’t know what POP or multiple mail clients are - beyond my level of understanding.

Do you have more than one iPhone or iPad or Mac or Windows or other computer accessing this mail?

If so, you have multiple mail clients.

Mail works using several different network protocols, two commonly used are POP and IMAP.

It'd be nice if this was easier to check, but here's one way:

On iPhone or iPad, Settings > Mail > Accounts > tap the problem Mail account > tap Account > tap Advanced > scroll down, and you should see incoming settings for POP or IMAP. Several lines up from the bottom of that display will be a line labeled Server Port.

Usually POP will show as Server Port 110 or more commonly as 995, and IMAP will show as Server Port 143 or more commonly as 993.

If you see 110 or 995, that downloads messages locally on the first mail client that accesses the messages, and the rest can get an error when they try to access the message.

Switching the connection to IMAP avoids that. If you find 110 or 995 there, I can post how to switch.

No add-ons that I’m aware of.
We have not changed any settings on our devices - problem just seemed to come out of nowhere several months ago

"We"? Are you possibly sharing an Apple ID with somebody else? That tends to get tangled.
