Gray screen issue on Mac

My older laptop (2011-12) opens to a grey screen that turns to a blue screen that doesn't go away.

I've watched many YouTube ideas about it (grey screen, blue screen, NVRAM, safe mode) as well as looking these up on various websites. It appears to be hopeless, so I'm turning to you, the world-wide community for answers on how to deal with it.

Here are some things I am unable to deal with:

won't include ANY input for passwords
blue screen fails to disappear or otherwise correct itself
pressing "shift" only shows me a "looking for an internet connection"

So ... help, please?
