Can't use Pencil on boundary of slide in Keynote when zoomed in

In Keynote on the iPad, if I zoom into the slide slightly (so that I can no longer see the "whole slide on one screen"), then I am unable to access the corners or the top/left/bottom/right boundary. In particular, I am completely unable to write there with the Apple Pencil. This is a problem, since that is where one usually puts the headings etc.
