iMac or MacBook?

Howdy! I’m wondering whether it would be best for me to get a desktop or laptop device. I used to have a MacBook but it died after a few years and have been surviving okay with just my iPad Air since then. Now that I have the money to upgrade I’m debating whether or not to get a desktop or laptop since the few things I need the computing power of an actual device dont necessarily need to be portable as my iPad does the trick. Should I get a desktop or is it smarter to just get a MacBook?

Hey there!

If your iPad Air can provide all the "mobile" computing you need, I'd also recommend an iMac. You'll get a large, 24-inch Retina display perfect for desktop computing. When choosing your Mac, be sure to get enough memory and storage for your needs. We could also suggest a specific model if you let us know what you plan to use the iMac for.

If you don't need portabilty I would recommend the iMac. I've had a MacBook Air and several MacBook Pros when I needed portability and now have an iMac. All of them did what I needed at the time but since I don't need portability, I like the fact that the iMac has no battery (and therefor no battery issues) and has a separate keyboard and trackpad or mouse that are easily replaceable (as I had some issues with MacBooks).

You haven't said what kind of apps you'd be running on your computer. For example, will you be doing any video editing or photo editing? If you edit videos, then you'll want more horsepower than a standard portable MacBook.

But if your horsepower needs are light, and portability is something you'd want, then I'd look at the MacBook Air. If moving from an iMac, I might recommend the 15" MacBook Air, as I think you'd appreciate the larger display than the 13" MacBook Air.

I used an iMac for many years, but have moved to portable Macs since 2016. It's really about what you're comfortable with.
