How to change the name of my AirTag when "Done" is grayed out?

I am trying to change the name of my AirTag ("Find My" app, Items, tap the AirTag name, rename item, type in the new name) but the iPhone "Done" button is grayed out so it will not let me change it. How do I get this change processed? (This question was originally posted by Vollaw522 but the topic was closed with no answer that worked for me, so I started a new topic because I want to post the answer that worked for me. This is my first post so if I am not following proper protocol I hope someone will let me know.)

WHAT WORKED FOR ME: In the "Find My" app, choose Items at the bottom, tap the AirTag name you want to change, Click rename item. Scroll the choices at the top and tap "Custom Name", click "x" to the right of the existing name to clear it out. The emoji circle is now blue & the emoji keyboard is shown -- choose an emoji. Put your cursor (tap) to the right of the emoji circle in the new name area, and then type in the new name. "Done" is now blue & livened so click it. Name was successfully changed. The trick was to pick an emoji first, and second to type in the new name.
