Why is purchased music missing from my apple playlist?

It may have been an unintentional deletion or other error. Use Finder or Windows Explorer to see if the files are still somewhere on your hard drive (including Trash/Recycle).
Also, if you are still using the same Apple ID, are in the same country, and the content is still available, you should be able to redownload fresh copies at no charge. Follow the steps in here:
