Even if you use Apple Mail, you will most likely need to contact your ISP - they are the ones providing you with internet (and therefore Mail app access). Did you set up an account in Mail using their info?

Hello Kodiak4me!
Please contact your Email provider, and explain this issue to them. If you’re using Apple Mail, please contact them here: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support.
I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Troubleshooting iPhone Mail:
Create and Use an App Password:
Note that you would need a new App Password, being that Mail is a third party app. You cannot log in using your eMail address password. Sometimes, changes are made to your Mac (i.e. update installation), and then incompatibility becomes an issue. As an example, go here for Hotmail: Manage app passwords for two-step verification - Microsoft Help
Buuuuut… it’s still a built in app.
being that Mail is a third party app
It was always an Apple app; installed as part of the OS.

Mail Being a Third-Party App:
It's a third-party app, as seen from the eMail provider's POV.

Correct. But, irrelevantly, the eMail provider needs to trust this device.
This is what I had to do H1290! It all worked out, evidently something had frozen up in the phone. Back in business now. Thank you all very very much for your help!!
You’re very welcome! 😊
