iOS duplicates default event alert with Google Calendar.

Hi, I am experiencing a bug where the alerts for calendar events change after I create events. This appears to only happen with my calendar synced with my Gmail/Google Calendar, but not my iCloud calendar.

I have a default alert set for my synced calendars to notify me one hour before an event, and whenever I create an event, the first alert is always the default alert I set (one hour before an event) and the second one notifies me when it is time to leave based on my location. This is all intended and expected.

However, whenever I exit the event and then click on it again, my first alert is 1 hour before (doesn’t say default) and the second alert says 1 hour before (does say default). My time to leave alert is gone, and any time I remove the unintended alert to get the time to leave alert back, it refreshes and adds the unintended alert back.

As stated before, this doesn’t happen with my iCloud calendars, just my synced Gmail calendar.

Update: I mistakenly assumed that this was a Google Calendar bug when synced with Apple Calendar. However, when I change my default alert to 2 hours before an event, the same thing mentioned above happens, except 2 hours instead of one. This is with Google Calendar alerts and notifications completely disabled through their website, so everything is being handled through Apple Calendar.

Any update on this? I’ve had this problem for years and have not figured it out. I do think it’s a Google problem because it does not do this on my iCloud calendar nor my Exchange calendar, just Google. Such a pain.

Also, if anyone has a way to reach Google Support by phone, I would love that info!

Hey there LilJohnnyRayy,

While you may need to get in touch with Google Support as this is only occurring with that account and not events with iCloud, we'd like to learn more about what's happening to see how we can help. We also want to rule out some possible causes:

  1. When did this start with events for your Google account?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  3. Since you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.4.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!
