iPod restore is stuck

I used the used my new iMac (Apple M1 running Ventura) to attempt a restore on an unresponsive Apple iPod shuffle. The procedure began and indicated that the restore was in progress, a small circular progress symbol near the iPod in the right of the screen progressed from white to filled-in with dark like a clock. Then nothing. So far the screen has not changed for 30 minutes. It is unclear if the process is still working. How should I proceed?
