Yubico Security Keys for 2FA

Will the Yubico Security Key C work for 2FA or do you require the 5 series keys?

Check out About Security Keys for Apple ID which covers what's required for Security Keys for Apple ID.


  • "At least two FIDO® Certified* security keys that work with the Apple devices that you use on a regular basis.
  • iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, or macOS Ventura 13.2, or later on all of the devices where you're signed in with your Apple ID.
  • Two-factor authentication set up for your Apple ID.
  • A modern web browser. If you can't use your security key to sign in on the web, update your browser to the latest version or try another browser.
  • To sign in to Apple Watch, Apple TV, or HomePod after you set up security keys, you need an iPhone or iPad with a software version that supports security keys."


Based on the information in Security Key C NFC by Yubico these security keys are FIDO® Certified. For any additional questions about compatibility, you'll want to contact the manufacturer directly here: Yubico

I tried the Security key C and it appeared to work, however , apple insists you have 2 keys so I will have to wait until I get the second key to complete the process. This key is ~$30, the 5 series keys are in the region of $70 each so it gets expensive....The 2 factor utilizing the key can be removed in settings, but do you need the key present to be able to remove the function? If not loss of a single key is not a big deal as long as you have access to the device you enabled it on.
