"Home hub not connected" HomeKit error

The Home app now persistently states that the home hub is not connected, with the usual issues for automations. This has been an issue for the last 48 hours or so - not connected to any obvious software update.

I have three home hubs - Apple TV 4K and two HomePods.

I have:

  • followed all of the instructions on Apple's page on troubleshooting this issue
  • rebooted all of them
  • signed out of iCloud and back in again on all of them
  • checked that the software is updated on all of them
  • rebooted my router.

And it still doesn't work. All three are listed as "standby" in the Home app (on iPhone and iPad. I've rebooted both of those as well, and checked that the OS is up to date).

I have also disabled the AppleTV as a hub, at which point it shows as such in the Home app, but the HomePods don't pick up as the hub even after power-cycling them.

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this, as it is more than somewhat annoying?

[Topic listed as AppleTV because Apple doesn't have a 'Home' topic. No idea if it is the TV or the HomePods or something else.]

This is a long-shot, but here is one possibly far-fetched idea:

  • setting all but one of your equipment to not be permitted to function a Home Hub nor as a bridge, followed by
  • restoring the only remaining device to its factory settings.

I was able to recover from my Home Hub problems using the above method. I disabled the ability to be a Home Hub and disconnected all but one of my equipment from the network. I also removed/unplugged all Home Hub bridges from the network, so the only choice was the restored equipment, which in my case was an Apple TV.

Thank you - I had tried that (disabled the TV and restored the HomePods) to no avail as it still persisted in setting the HomePods on standby.

It has eventually worked (so far) by removing both the HomePods and AppleTV from Home entirely and then re-adding the TV, setting it to disabled, and then adding the HomePods back again. Fingers crossed the HomePod now stays connected.
