iMessage reply "sent as text message"

What happens if I send a reply to a specific iMessage, and it turns green and says "sent as text message"? Does it still show up as a reply on the other user's phone? Or just another new text message?

In order for something to get sent as an iMessage, both the sender and the recipient need to be 1) logged into iMessage and 2) have an active data connection. I most often see that notice if one or the other of us doesn't have a data connection. The message will show up in the same thread but it will be green (on your side) instead of blue.
