How to sign into Apple TV on fire stick 4k

I updated my FireStick and reinstalled the Apple TV app on the new FireStick. It worked flawlessly previously but on my new FireStick I cannot log in. I no longer get the QR code to log in with my phone. Instead I'm asked to sign in with my Apple ID. Every time I log in, I get the message "Verification Failed. There were errors signing you in. Wait a moment, then try again." I get this message despite uninstalling and reinstalling the app, restarting the firestick, etc.. Please let me know why I can't see the QR code to sign in like I did previously and/or why my apple ID and password aren't working either.
