HLS music format, why?

I just purchased John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme (Deluxe Edition)" and it downloaded a mix of m4a and hls files to my laptop. hls files will not play anywhere outside of apple products, and won't convert to mp3.

So I paid $16 for an album that I can't copy to a hard drive to play on my hi-fi.

I have requested a refund, purchased the mp3 files from Amazon and will be sure that I check Amazon before purchasing anything else from iTunes.

The m4a version should be playable everywhere. Apple Music Store still provides AAC audio files. No lossless.

Lossless is available only via streaming. The HLS files you downloaded should be the lossless offline version. It's used HLS because the files contains DRM.
