Can I back up my macbook pro to the cloud or do I have to buy an external hard drive? Sending it out for repair. It has a 500gb hard drive.

You cannot use Time Machine to back up to iCloud, you'll need an external drive.
You can ensure that your files are synced in iCloud Drive and Desktop and Documents, but that will not back up everything.
