Numbers. How to get the value in a cell

I keep my home accounts using a numbers spreadsheet - the last column is a formula showing the running total. However, when I sort the information by date the formula does not stay pointing at the cell above. It seems to keep the cell reference where it came from and no longer references the pertinent values. Is there a way to keep the formulas intact when I sort by date?
