as always I update to the newest iOS as soon as possible, but this time I have now got a blank red dot on my voicemail, there is no messages stored, I've tried airplane mode, I've restarted the device, I've turned badges off and restarted then turned back on, I can't do anything with settings > phone > voicemail password, it says unavailable.
any help appreciated.

Try a force restart. Press and very quickly release the volume up button, press and very quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button for about twenty seconds. When the Apple logo appears, release the button. The timing is a little tricky, so try it a few times!

You're welcome. When you say a "blank red dot", do. you just mean a notification bubble (similar to the one below)?
Yes that kind of dot on the phone icon > voicemail
