iOS 16 "Duplicate photos cannot be merged at this time."

I am trying to merge lots of duplicate photos using the new iOS feature in the Photos app. I’m using iPhone 14 Pro. If I select more than a couple of hundred photos, it spins for a few seconds and then I see the message:

"Duplicate photos cannot be merged at this time."

I have a large library but I thought I should be able to bulk merges the dupes.

Hi there FinbarrB,

If you are unable to merge duplicate Photos on your iPhone, let's restart your iPhone and try again. This refreshes the software of the iPhone and can resolve issues like this. Here's how: Restart your iPhone

Once your iPhone is done restarting, ensure you're following these steps from Find and delete duplicate photos and videos on iPhone to merge these photos:

1. Tap Albums, then tap Duplicates below Utilities.

Duplicate photos and videos appear next to each other.

2. Tap Merge to combine the duplicates, then tap Merge [number] Items.

Merging combines the highest quality version and all of the relevant data across the duplicates, and keeps that one in your library. The remaining duplicates are moved to the Recently Deleted album.

Take care!
