Apple Music desktop app stalls out playing music from Library

Hi there! Running Monterey, on a new MacBook Air. For what it's worth, I also had this problem on my older MacBook Pro, too, when I was running Big Sur. I had hoped that the OS upgrade and new hardware might fix the problem, but to no avail.

All my music is stored locally on my hard drive. When playing back—and it doesn't seem to matter whether it's playing from a playlist, or just an album selected from the library—it will play fine for a while, and then the music will abruptly stop.

I have noticed a pattern with it, which is that the issue will seem to occur at the end of a track. The playhead will reach the end of a track, and the next song will begin to play, but the new song will not display in the "now playing" window. When it reaches the end of the new song, playback will stop. Neither the old song nor the new song will show up in the "Recently Played" playlist.

So, for instance, if I had two songs, call them "C" and "D," "C" will play, and then the playhead will sit at the end of "C" while "D" plays, and then at the end of "D" playback will stop. I'll look in on the music app and see that the playhead is still frozen at the end of "C," and neither "C" nor "D" will reflect that they've been played in either their "play count" value or their "last played" date value unless I adjust these manually.

I am typically playing to Sonos speakers, using AirPlay, over wi-fi. I can play to these speakers fine from my iPhone, but when I'm working, I like to play music from my laptop rather than have to distract myself by switching to phone, so I'd like to have this resolved.

I don't have crossfading enabled, but two other things governed in preferences might be interfering here? One, the Mac is supposed to send a notification when a song changes, and two, I have Sound Check enabled, so it may be checking the next track for a volume differential? I'm not sure why either of these would trigger a bug in playback, but they are at least possible suspects, and I will probably troubleshoot next by turning them off, unless anyone has any other ideas.
