My iPhone won’t pick up my dog’s AirTag when I leave home

My iPhone won’t pick up my dog’s air tag when I leave home. I thought they would pick up anywhere. Am I doing something wrong?

AirTags use Bluetooth, not gps.

They have to be within a 30’ range of an iPhone to report their location.

If they aren’t near an Apple device, you can’t see where they are.

Have you set up Separation Alerts for the AirTag? Link-> Set separation alerts in case you leave an AirTag or item behind in Find My on iPhone - Apple Support

It won't alert wether the AirTag is in the house or not, only if the AirTag is separated from you / your device.

If you leave, and she leaves, it will alert only when you are separated. The action of leaving the house would not cause an alert.

Hi, I do have that set. My goal is to be able to find my dog with her air tag if she runs off from home. I thought it would show me her location, but it only shows her when she’s at the house. When my husband takes her walking at a park, I thought the GPS would pick her up, but it isn’t. It works fine in the house. The battery is good.
