I can open apps inApp Store and use them but can't get the picture of the app to show up on my iphone screen

I can open app in the Apple store and use it but I can't get the app to download to my Iphone screen

That sounds like the apps are in your App Library but not on a home screen. Go to the App Library (swipe left past your last home screen). From there you can touch and hold an app and slide it left back to the home screen.
