Do I have to have a primary icloud email account to use iCloud for Windows?

Thank you! My original problem was that it is impossible for me to log in to the app iCloud for Windows (with my gmail-address as user name). I get an error message telling me that I use the wrong user name or wrong password. I can use the same user name och password on iCloud.com and that works fine.
