Is there a certain way to engage the release button? I can’t get it to do anything.
How to find and activate the watch band release button. I’m getting nothing from all the pressing.

Don't force it. If you tried this:
Change your Apple Watch band - Apple Support
and had no luck, Then I suggest you take it to an Apple Store near you and let them look at it.
