How do I change the brightness of the background say to a sepia my eyes are sensitive to the bright background.

You can set the background of a section here - Document > Section > Background.
If you click the colored "globe" you can not only change the color but also you will see an "Opacity" control.
If your document is divided into multiple sections you can have a different background for each, or apply the same background, section by section.
