My iPad is disabled due to numerous passcode errors but now I remember my passcode. Must I still wipe my iPad?

My iPad is disabled due to numerous passcode errors but now I remember my passcode. Must I still wipe my iPad?
It's an older iPad before the lightning plugs came out. When I connect it to iTunes says it cannot connect to it until I use the correct passcode. However, back on the iPad it's disabled so I am stuck between the two!!
Yes. Knowing the passcode only makes a difference if you previously backed the iPad up.
