Hi FayeDale,

Do you have a screen protector on? This can sometimes trigger the proximity sensor next to the camera in the iPhone.

If not, try a few of these things. Others have had similar issues with iPhones in the past, particularly older iPhones and the iPhone X, and these things have helped:

Make sure the accessibility setting Reduce Motion is off

Uninstall (and reinstall) the Compass app

Restart your iPhone (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559)

I hope this is useful FayeDale. Please let me know if any of it works. Thanks.

Hi FayeDale,

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you today!

When you say talking, I understand you mean when you are talking on the phone with your phone to your ear. Your phone’s screen goes black when you are in a call and when it senses the something near the proximity sensor (located right where you put your ear when you talk on the phone.). This is done to prevent your face from pressing any buttons while you are talking.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

Merry Christmas.
