Portrait type photos are corrupted (grey area appear) when transferring from iPhone to PC

When using the bulk transfer from iPhone to PC (Windows 10) with "Keep Originals" settings in Photos, the imported portrait (IMG_Exxxx) photos are corrupted and they are imported as HEIC as well as the originals.

Few months ago with the above settings, the portrait photos were transferred as IMG_Exxxx.JPG instead of HEIC format. There is no any other issue with the normal HEIC photos, only with the portrait type photos.

If I change to the "Automatic" setting when transferring to PC in the Photos application, the portrait images are transferred properly in IMG_E.jpg, but in this scenario all other HEIC photos are not rotated properly and the EXIF data can be lost.

I prefer using the "Keep Originals" settings when transferring from iPhone to PC, but it seems that there is a bug when you are importing the Portrait type of photos that should be copied as JPG and rotated properly regardless of the "Keep Originals" settings.

Thank you,

Peter

@Ryder_del_Fin, Refer my answer on the other post about this issue in Apple Communities: Portrait Mode Photos Corrupted (Gray Bar) - Apple Community

To summarise though:

  • yes, I'm using the Windows iCloud app, not a web browser (although there's a partial workaround to the download size for unedited photos in a web browser, it doesn't help us with the grey bar issue).
  • you can change the name of the folder where iCloud saves photos. I've called mine "Download" in the location you saw in my screenshot.
  • no, using an external drive doesn't help. Not sure why you are seeing a difference?
  • The only workarounds I found were to use a 3rd party cloud backup tool (I tested OneDrive, Dropbox and iDrive and both work to get the full resolution edited photo)

Other important points to note:

  • the issue is not just "Portrait" mode photos. Can't remember what setting I used for the below landscape photo, but clearly the grey bar occurred.

Note: My reason for mentioning the HEIF extension was that I was just adding to @davidg82's post to explain which extension on MS Store to use.   It's not really relevant to the grey bar issue - just friendly advice because someone was saying they didn't know how to display (valid) .heic files on Windows.  FWIW, I have Windows 10 and it certainly didn't recognize .heic files by default. I needed to install the extensions to be able to display the photo in an .heic file.  Based on my Google'ing, WIndows 11 doesn't support .heic out of the box either - you need to install the extension for it too. If you don't have the extension installed, you can still open the file with 3rd party tools that support .heic, or you can open it to examine it at byte level with an editor that supports doing so. As you're adamant photos with a grey bar are just mis-named jpeg files, it sounds like you've probably done that.

I have this problem to, since 2020... first with my Iphone xs and now same problem continue in my Iphone 12 Pro Max... My dad experience same problem too since 2020. His Iphone is 11 Pro and he use his own PC (Win 10).

I lost several several photos because of this problem, because when I saw and discovered the problem, I went to review the photos from last months and several had the problem, but I had already deleted the original from iphone.

How long time Apple will delay to fix it?

The problem dont happened only with Portrait photos, as you can see bellow, theses photos were exported today (05/22/2021). But is true that this problem happen only with "IMG_E...." photos.

Are you sure about your Phone11Pro in July 2020? Or is it possible that by then you were using the "automatic" import option and imported JPG files instead? I ask just because I have never been able (inlcudind early 2020) to import .HEIC files with modifications like portrait properly...

I do strongly not expect for Apple to address this problem in a iOS update. It is a known bug since a loooong time know and many iOS updates have passes since withou any improvement...

Maybe there are software licensing issues?

This will absolutely be the last iphone I bought - even if I bought them all since the very first one came out. Now that Steve Jobs is gone, apple quality is getting worse every day...

Wow - just transferred photographs from my sister's birthday party and a few days afterwards.

Using iPhone 12 mini, latest 14.6 software, still in warranty.

Transferred with "Keep Originals" in latest Windows 10, using "CUT" to preserve "Creation Date" and other metadata in a fresh folder on the Desktop.

While the first ones look fine, many - including with my little niece - are ruined.

As I used "CUT", the original is no longer in the iPhone.

SHOCKING that a "premium" product should produce such shoddy results, and even worse there's no solution or feedback here after 256 days since the complaint was raised.

Yep same problem with both iphone 11po max and iphone 12 pro max on Windows 10 and even Windows 11.... OMG Apple can you fix this issue. Confirm only happens when set to keep originals and the photo is potrait img_Exxxxx

Also the above comments are correct about automatically, keeps crashing and disconnecting phone. Thats been for a while, but the greyed out bottom of photos about a year or so. So annoying, all good photos can view them in Windows.

And the transfer to the HD is not automatic in my case, it's simply opening up the iPhone directory and transferring the photos through cut and paste to a file folder in Windows. I can't get the iPhone to work with the cloud transfer. . they just stay in the cloud and will not download to the HD. So I use direct via cable to HD. Which should work even better than cloud transfers.

How can we fix affected jpg files. I already tried 3 jpg recovery tools but to no avail. The jpg file I possess is supposed to be the (affected) original because I have the "keep originals" setting selected for transfer to mac or pc. Don't have any other originals on the iphone as I always delete them from my phone after I download them to my NAS for storage reasons.

So this thread and issue have been ongoing since Nov 2020 (and likely earlier) but no Apple solution has been given? I am getting sick of Apple's disregard for how their products mate up with Windows and Linux users.

Essentially, if you're a Windows user then there's no point in using Portrait mode or any other premium iPhone photo features. By extension, there's less reason to use an iPhone if you're a Windows user.

WTF Apple. You could not fix this within a year??? So many baby photos are now ruined. I connected cable and moved all photos to pc folder. Now many of them are corrupted. I never get those photos back. I really hope someone sues apple for this. Camera was one key factor I bought this overpriced product and now this disaster happens. Instead they are researching how to scan and spy your photos in newer update on iOS 15. Very disappointing I can’t stress that enough.

So... Keep Originals don't work cause portrait type photos (and edited landscape ones as well) get destroyed when importing. Allright... let's use Automatic for lesser qualify photos.

With automatic checked in settings I get error message when on half way of copying: The device is unreachable.

When I google it, solution is to check Keep Originals in settings instead of Automatic...

I really hate Apple right now! :(((
