Apple Watch 6 cannot read me messages

Has anyone else had this trouble? I bought the Apple Watch series 6. When I ask Siri if i have any messages or if she can read me my messages, the exact response is, “I can’t help you with that here, unfortunately.”

Siri is enabled. Siri will do anything else for me as expected. Siri can dictate a message to send, or I ask it questions about maps or internet searches. It is ONLY these two requests that it cannot do.

The watch has been reset and un-paired and re-paired to my phone. Everything is up to date on my iPhone 11 and my watch. I have personally handed my watch over to a certified apple repair technician who could not figure it out, as well as spoken to apple support two times over the phone and no one is able to repair the issue. A case has been opened, but the apple repair technician recommended I wait for an update to see if it corrects itself. It did not. An update came and went and this is still happening. I would have exchanged my watch at the store where I originally purchased it but it is 6 hours away from my home, as I live in a small town.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is this a defect with just my watch or is this a software issue that will eventually resolve?

Hi NaRaeB,

Thanks for reaching out through Apple Support Communities for help with this issue you're experiencing when trying to use Siri to read messages on your Apple Watch. We're definitely glad to look into this with you and help sort it out!

Let's get to them bottom of this together. To start, are you able to have Siri read back your messages when using iPhone?

Please also let us know the exact version of watchOS installed on your Apple Watch, and iOS installed on your iPhone, as there have been a number of software updates recently.

You can find the software version under Settings > General > About on each device. If an update is available for either device, be sure to install it before testing again. The following guides can help with updating each device:

Hi Karina. Yes when I ask my iPhone Siri to read me my messages or ask if I have any messages I get a response saying you have two new messages for example, or you have no new messages for example, or it will read me my messages. It is only when I ask Siri on my watch this question that it says it is unable to help.

The software currently installed on my Apple Watch is 0S 7.0.2

The software currently installed on my iPhone is iOS 14.1

Hi NaRaeB,

Thanks so much for confirming that Siri is working without issue for these requests on your iPhone. Since it's also working for all other requests on your Apple Watch, we'll want to investigate this more directly at this point.

Same exact problem with iOS 14.2 and watchOS 7.1. I then put watchOS 7.1 on my series 4 Apple Watch and got the exact same results. This is definitely a problem since watchOS version 7.1, and I have no way to get back to version 7 or even version 6 on my series 6 Apple Watch.

it should also be noted that with watchOS 7.1, when I ask Siri to send a message to somebody, I get no audible feedback asking what to send, and then no verbal feedback confirming the message or whether I want to send it. I have confirmed that I have audio feedback set to always and that it is also showing as reflected on the watch app.

This is also a very big reason why I use the Apple Watch, and why this is such a problem.

Any help would be most appreciated, as I am a low vision user and rely heavily on this functionality.
