How can I transfer my contacts from one iPhone to a later model?

I ordered an iPhone 12Pro and have been told that contacts do not transfer from my iPhone 7 to a new iPhone. How can I transfer the contacts win my old phone?

Your contacts should be available in the iCloud:

Transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

iCloud: Restore your contacts, calendars and reminders, or bookmarks
