How to force eject dvd (not showing in Finder) from mid 2010 MBP

Hi

Pulled out mid-2010 15" MBP running Yosemite to see if dvd would play in its internal cd/dvd player. It happily sucked it in, but now doesn't recognize it and DVD player says "There was an initialization error. A valid dvd drive could not be found. [-70012]"

It doesn't show up in Disk Utility.

Anyway to force eject it?

I got it out!

I became very determined Sunday night. I'd tried nearly everything thing plenty of times. Everything except turn it sideways, hold down the touch pad and spank it a couple times and voila: it came out.

Tho this wasn't the first place I saw the technique, but this was where I followed it.

  • Shut down the Mac
  • Boot the machine holding down the Trackpad button to initiate a ‘force eject’
  • Turn the MacBook Pro on its side, with the CD/DVD drive pointing down, and shake, the CD should pop out
  • A couple good spanks, not too hard, was my addition to the process

But thank you very much for your determined efforts to help and the wise info you provided.

Cheers!

Does the drive even make an attempt to eject the disc? If the slot is compressed or if the felt lining has gotten stiff due to being exposed to liquid, then it can prevent the disc from ejecting.

If the disc isn't even attempting to eject, then the only way to retrieve the disc is to open the laptop, remove the optical drive, and remove the top cover of the optical drive so you can lift out the disc.
