I have a second generation iPod nano and I wanted to put some songs on it but every time I plug it into my computer it doesn’t come up. What should I do?

Ipod Classic I have an iPod Classic and when I recently plugged it into my computer to sync it, all the music was wiped from it. Now it's got a software 'loading' on it and no music. I did a hard restart on the iPod but nothing changed. Help!
