Try going to the iMovie Backups folder to see if you can recover your project.
To get to the iMovie Backups folder, follow this file path from the Finder menu:
Go/Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovieBackups
When you get there you will see a list of previous backups of your iMovie library. Click on one dated just before
your issue started. iMovie will open in that library. Navigate to your projects browser (where your projects are displayed as icons) and see if your projects are intact.
The above should solve your issue.

Can't find it. Have scrolled several times. Even did a search for the word Containers... :(
p.s. Feeling desperate. And finding Apple Support rather unsupportive. They called twice, kept me on hold for nearly 10 min each time, and hung up before anyone came on the line.
Any luck with this yet? It is puzzling as to why your Mac does not have a Containers folder.
If no success with anything tried so far, control-click on the iMovie library icon in the Movies folder (Go/Home/Movies) and see if your project is listed in the list of projects and events that appear. You can't play the projects there, and you should not move or modify them in any way. Just see if the project is listed.
In the event nothing works, you may need to purchase recovery software and see if you can retrieve the project.

Well, congrats. Must be quite a relief to save 2 months of work.
If you don’t already have Time Machine set up this would be a good time to do that. Until then, good idea to make a backup copy of your present library.
Have fun. 😊

I can't find the /Containers/ part of the file path
It should be in the Home library. You might need to scroll carefully to find it.

O.K. If you have a Time Machine backup then use that to restore your library to a point in time just before you deleted your project.

Thanks. Got through to Apple Support and managed to recover the project. Opened iMovie holding down Option key - and found the Library it was in.
So, you didn't actually delete the project after all?

Apparently not. Found a backup. So it's all good. Still puzzled about 'containers' though.
