When was I asked to create a passcode when setting up new IPad?

A pass code would be a 4/6 digit number you set up when you set you your iPad.
It's not your Apple ID.

I don't remember anything about a passcode.
What is the passcode?
My Apple ID or password?
Does that passcode have letters and numbers?
