Open Settings ➔ iTunes & App Store ➔ Under Automatic Downloads, Turn OFF Apps (You can turn OFF Music and Books & Audiobooks as well). Do this on both iPhones. Leave App Updates to ON so that your downloaded apps can autoupdate.
