can i trust pop up notice on MacBook saying virus found?

a new window opened and said 3 viruses were detected and to click to run a repair/scan. I've never seen this before and always wary of ploys to get you to click and chose to immediately close the window.

Now I'm wondering if it was legit.

How do I know?

And how can I run a safe scan on my MacBook?

Such popup messages are scams. Do not interact with the message. Close the offending page, and avoid sites that are involved in such bogus advertising tactics.
