If I delete a photo from iphone will it also be deleted from icloud photo library too?

If I delete a photo from my iPhone, will the photo also be deleted from icloud photo library too? From what I read, photos are not part of a particular backup since they are already on icloud. Are photos also backee up or not? I there any way to get a photo off iphone but still on icloud?

iCloud Photos is a syncing service. Any photo you delete from a device where iCloud Photos is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to iCloud Photos. You can potentially reduce the storage space required on a device by turning on Optimize Storage. See: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204264

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.

Another way that photos may be on iCloud (if you don’t have iCloud Photo Library turned on) is via a backup of an iOS device. The only thing you can do with a backup is use it to restore a device or set up a new device. The contents of backups are not viewable at iCloud.com and if you delete a photo from a device it will not be included in future backups and will be lost.

Yes, if you delete a photo from your iPhone while iCloud Photo Library is enabled, it will also be deleted from iCloud. Apple warns you of this every time you are about to delete a photo:

Photos are not included in iCloud backups, but are included in backups made in iTunes.

You could save the photos you take into iCloud Drive if you don’t want to utilise iCloud Photo Library. The process is not automatic but would allow you to use your iCloud storage.

To do this;

  1. Go into the photos app on your device
  2. Select the photo(s) you want to save to iCloud Drive
  3. Press the share icon
  4. Choose “Save to Files” from the share sheet.

Hope this helps.

Mike - re: "Photos are not included in iCloud backups, but are included in backups made in iTunes."

-- note that if iCloud Photos is not turned on in a device, photos are included in both iCloud Backups and in backups to a computer via iTunes. If iCloud Photos is turned on in a device then the photos are not included in either iCloud Backup or backup via iTunes. See: About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support
