Mac Mail not downloading

Today my Mac mail is not downloading new email. All my accounts are active. I can send email, just not receive. When I click get new email, a message says downloading 122 messages but they never appear.

The mail preferences panel opens showing only fonts and colors. Have shut down and restarted computer, used disk utility to no avail.

All new email does show on my iPhone.

Thanks. Solved my own problem by:

Finally tracked down com.apple.mail.plist at:

It was in the ByHost folder. Deleted com.apple.mail.plist file, closed mail and reopened, and now the mail preference panel is back.

With OSX there is no “reset all settings” like on iphone and if you have gone from Early versions thru to Mojave with the same user account over many years your ~Library may be full of obsolete files and settings.

Its always worth creating a new User Account with full Admin privilege in System Preferences, Users and groups, and setting up and running Mail under that user.

If it fixes your problems, consider moving your data photos movies and music to the new account permanently. It’s not s minor job though, but I did it recently to get rid of years of obsolete files in my ~Library. They’re not supposed to cause problems but they can.

There are other options to clear out your mail/V6 folder that I will not go into.

Let me expand.

Theres something about your email account that makes it different from your wife’s. Just guessing yours was that pesky Google mail.

The new information that you have another Mac with the same problem makes a huge difference to diagnosis. Was that Mac a clone of yours or set up entirely separately?

At least you know your mail components in your ~Library is causing your preferences problems. Tough to fix without deleting files or folders. Is that problem also on your wife’s Mac? Its all diagnostic evidence.

My wife's computer is not a clone of my computer. Also, went to my daughters house and tried on her iMac and had the same problem about 4 PM.. All three computers are totally different, but having the same problems with my email account. The email provider, APlusnet, said the problem was not theirs.

Today, July 5th, all of a sudden the emails I was not receiving arrived. The control panel for mail preferences is still not working, so not able to edit passwords etc.

If someone knows which plist to delete please respond.

(Backup your mac to a reliable source before messing with it)

You could try the mail rebuild process built into Mail.

Another option is to move all your stuff bit by bit to the new admin account you created. In involves one account giving read access to the other and its a pretty manual process. You can delete the old empty account when happy. It does lose a lifetime of obsolete ~Library junk.

I searched for all .plists (found 592) using EasyFind.

I updated my mail preferences and re-checked, and the only .plist that had the relevant timestamp was com.apple.xpc.activity2.plist which makes no sense at all. Maybe it isn't even a .plist that controls preferences.

Think about migrating to the clean admin account. I can't take this any further for you.
